The importance of Aquileia derives from its historical role as a military colony founded by the Romans in the second century B.C. It then became one of the major cities of the Roman Empire and an important river port.
As evidence of its splendor during the Roman era, Aquileia boasts a vast archaeological site, where it is possible to admire many artifacts, including the ruins of the forum, the burial ground, the river port and a few habitations.
Aquileia also played an important religious role at the beginning of the Christian era; it is thus possible to admire the remains of an early Christian Basilica, unique exemplar of religious architecture dating back to the 5th-6th Centuries. The beautiful mosaics that decorated the structure are now visible in the Early Christian Museum in Aquileia.
